Cove Baptist History
The first 6 months
On January 6, 2008, a
group of fourteen (14) adults were invited to
attend a Prayer Service at the home of Todd and
Terena McCarter, 5022 Willow Creek Drive, Owens
Cross Roads, AL 35763 at 5:30 p.m. The purpose
of this meeting was for spiritual renewal and to
seek God’s guidance in our lives. Those
attending that meeting were:
|
Ronnie and Sonya Atchley |
|
Todd and Terena McCarter |
|
Rev. Doug, Jr and Amanda Browner |
|
William F. (Billy) and Glenda Moody |
|
Rev. Brad Hill |
|
Eaton (Robbie) and Audrey Robinson |
|
J.W. (Jake) and Janet Harden |
|
Allen Willcutt |
Seven children were present that night but did
not take part in the meeting. They were: Audrey,
Adam and Austin Browner and Cassidy, Natalie,
Brady and Harmony McCarter
After Bro. Todd gave devotion from the Book of
Nehemiah and we had a time of prayer, a
discussion was held concerning the possibility
of planting a new traditional Baptist Church in
the Big Cove and Hampton Cove Communities of
Huntsville, AL. It was decided that the group
would continue as a Bible Study at the
McCarter’s home on Sunday nights and would
continue to seek God’s leadership in the
planting of a new church.
As the number attending these Bible Studies
increased on a weekly basis, it became clear
that God was definitely leading in the direction
of establishing a new church dedicated to
reaching the lost and the unchurched in these
communities.
On January 27, 2008, a business meeting was held
for the purpose of discussing the details of
establishing a new church. Among the items
discussed were the name and the denomination of
the church, a place to meet and the
establishment of a finance committee. It was
decided at this meeting that the Church would
follow the doctrines of the Southern Baptist
Convention.
On February 3, 2008, the group started a regular
Sunday morning service at 10:30 a.m. in addition
to the Sunday night Bible Studies. The name Cove
Baptist Church was chosen to indicate the area
in which the church would be located and to
unite our mission field between the two
communities of Big Cove and Hampton Cove. Rev.
Douglas Browner, Jr., was called and accepted
the position as the first Pastor of Cove Baptist
Church.
The slogan “Where Hearts Come Together” as
suggested by Bro. Doug Browner, Jr., was chosen
for the church and is based on scripture taken
from John 17:21-23. A logo with a cross
intertwined with a red heart was designed by
Bro. Todd McCarter and adopted as the church’s
official logo.
On April 6, 2008, the church held the first
service in a leased house at 191 Terry Drake
Road, Owens Cross Roads, AL and continues to
meet at this house today. On April 27th the
first public Profession of Faith was made by
Kevin Clemons. The first Wednesday Night Prayer
Service was held on May 7th and the first
Vacation Bible School was held June 27-29th with
a total enrollment of fifty-nine and with three
professions of faith. On July 1st, the Women’s
Ministries was established.
At a special called business meeting on July 30,
2008, the church voted to incorporate. The legal
paperwork was completed and the Articles of
Incorporation were filed with the Probate
Judge’s Office on August 14, 2008. A Church
Media Library was also established during the
month of August.
On September 6th the church started Sunday
School with five (5) classes: Adults, Youth, 3rd
& 4th Grades, Kindergarten - 2nd Grade and
Nursery/Toddlers with a total enrollment of
forty-two (42).
We can look back and see how God has led and
blessed this congregation over the past several
months. All our needs have been supplied through
God’s grace. We have seen God work in every area
of the church from supplying our financial
needs, our material needs and, most of all, our
spiritual needs during this time of adjustments
and decisions. The fellowship among our members
is loving and supportive which makes it a joy to
be a part of this congregation. We look forward
with much anticipation and excitement to the
future and to what great things God will do as
we seek His Will and follow His leadership.
